This post highlights the best Solo Travel Croatia itinerary for you to make new friends!
ZADAR
Known for the Roman and Venetian ruins around its Old Town and the Sea Organ, Zadar is, in reality, much more than that and offers two distinct vibes, modern and historic. That’s probably why it draws so many travelers.
The charming Old Town will make you step back in time. Take a leisurely stroll, look at the architecture, and stop at a terrace for a drink—I highly recommend you to try Croatian beers; they’re the best and are so cheap! In brief, enjoy a slower and warm day.
On the other hand, the modern side of the city offers many activities, perfect for shopping or nightlife adventures. Choose the vibe that suits your solo trip in Croatia and enjoy!
“But that’s not telling me how to make new friends while traveling solo…” you might think. Don’t worry, here’s the secret sauce!
Hostels are the perfect place for meeting fellow solo travelers. Later, I’ll share a list of the best hostels in Zadar. But how to create new connections if you are not staying in a hostel? Easy! Engage with others while visiting famous attractions or joining excursions—nothing starts a conversation like a shared interest!
Now armed with the insider’s guide to making new friends on your solo adventure in Croatia, here are the top things to do in Zadar, and the best hostel recommendations in the area!
TOP THINGS TO DO IN ZADAR
Zadar’s Old town, with its architecture and vestiges:
As previously mentioned, the Old Town of Zadar is one of the best places in Croatia to see Roman and Venetian ruins and architecture. Simply wander through the cobbled streets and make sure you take in everything—from the Church of St. Donatus to the Roman Forum and the city gates!
The Sea Organ and Sun Salutation:
Right next to each other, if you see one, you can’t possibly miss the other! Both are art installations powered by nature. The Sea Organ will enchant you with the sounds it creates from the waves of the Adriatic Sea, while the Sun Salutation showcases a light show powered by the sun. How cool—and eco-friendly—is that?
Islands hopping in Kornati Islands National Park:
There’s a reason why Croatia is often called “the land of a thousand islands”… So, while you’re visiting Croatia, don’t miss out on an island hopping excursion—and remember, excursions are a great way to make new friends on your solo travels!
But why choose the Kornati Islands? Crystal-clear waters, pristine nature, and rugged coastline… I think that says it all! Tours start from $50, but prices can vary depending on what’s included and the duration. Just make sure to do your own research to find what suits you best!
Krka National Park:
One of my favorite excursions to go on while visiting Croatia! Krka National Park is a real piece of heaven… But don’t be fooled, if you go during peak seasons, it will be crowded, no matter what time you visit. Entrance fees vary depending on the season, but you can find tariffs for 2024 right here!
To get there, you have two options: going by your own means with public transportation from Zadar to Skradin, or paying for a guided tour. Personally, I think you’ll be okay going on your own and will save a ton of money too. But if you feel more comfortable with a guide, it’s up to you! If you want to go with public transportation, here is everything you need to know to plan your excursion. Don’t forget to share it with the fellow travelers you met on your solo trip in Croatia!
Enjoy sunset over the Adriatic Sea:
Sunsets in Croatia never disappoint! And if you’re looking for the best place in Zadar to end your day, head to the Greeting to the Sun. An installation that will give you the best panoramic view in the city.
Cultural events:
Zadar is known to be one of the best place in Croatia when it comes to cultural events. It doesn’t matter what time of the year you are visiting, something will be happening…
Here are the most popular festivals in Zadar to look up: The Festival of St. Donatus, The Zadar Summer Theater Festival, The Zadar Outdoor Festival, The KalelargArt Street Festival, The Zadar Film Festival and The Zadar Organ Festival.
Take a day off at the beach:
Traveling in Croatia, or anywhere else really, can be exhausting, especially when you’re solo traveling and have to deal with everything by yourself… So don’t forget to leave room for slower days when planning your itinerary. And in Zadar, what better way to relax than by going to one of the nearby beaches and sunbathing for a few hours?

SPLIT
If you’re planning a solo trip to Croatia, I’m pretty sure you’ve heard of Split. It’s one of the most popular cities in the country, and for good reason… Not only is the Old Town one of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen, but the cultural and historic heritage of this town is incomparable.
History, architecture, beaches, nature, nightlife, shops… There’s something for everyone in Split! And that’s what makes it a perfect place for your solo travel in Croatia. The diversity of the city is what attracts other tourists. And no matter what your interests are, you’ll surely find fellow travelers who share the same.

TOP THINGS TO DO IN SPLIT
EXPLORE THE OLD TOWN AND THE DIOCLETIAN’S PALACE:
Even if you’re not planning on visiting Diocletian’s Palace, you will. Trust me, you can’t possibly miss it. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is simply one of the most charming and beautiful places you’ll ever see.
Wander around the narrow streets and literally get lost in the Old Town. Bars, restaurants, cafés, shops, museums… Just explore everything this place has to offer. I promise you, you’re going to love it!
For a panoramic view of the city, climb the Bell Tower of St. Domnius. There’s no better place to be to look at the Old Town from above!
SPEND A DAY SUNBATHING ON THE BEACH:
Looking to spend a day chilling and sunbathing on the beach? Split has the perfect sandy place for you: Bacvice Beach! Be aware, though, that as it’s the most popular beach in the city, it can be crowded…
If you’ve already been to Bacvice Beach and want to discover a new one in the area, I have the perfect spot for you…
Located an hour and a half by bus from Split, Brela boasts crystal-clear waters and a rocky beach. Believe me, it’s just a piece of heaven, and one of my favorite place to spend a day on the Adriatic coast!
GO ON AN ISLAND EXCURSION:
“The land of a thousand islands”… Once again, one of the must-do activities in Croatia, as a solo traveler or not, is going on an island excursion! Whether you want some alone time on a deserted beach or want to meet new people, going on an island excursion seems to be the perfect idea! You could even stay for a few days if you like it!
Here are the most popular islands near Split:
- Pakleni
- Hvar
- Brac
- Dugi Otok
- Mljet and the National Park
- Pag
If you want to know more about the best islands near Split, here is the article that helped me plan my trip when I was visiting Croatia!
VISIT THE FAMOUS BLUE CAVE:
Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to visit the famous Blue Cave when I was visiting Croatia… But I’ve heard so many wonderful things about it that I couldn’t not mention it in this article!
From the information I gathered at the time, the tour is a full-day excursion and takes you not only to the Blue Cave but also to five other islands! It’s quite an expensive activity, though… The tour costs approximately $100 and doesn’t include the entry fee to the cave (between $10 and $20 depending on the season)…
It’s up to you to see if it fits into your budget! But if you go, please, enjoy the views for me!
ENJOY SPLIT’S NIGHTLIFE:
The main reason why Split is so famous among solo travelers and young travelers is the nightlife! It doesn’t matter if you visit Croatia during peak season or shoulder season, there will always be a party waiting for you!
Bars, nightclubs, music festivals… There’s a lot happening! And when traveling solo, what better way to meet new people than by sharing your travel anecdotes over a few drinks?
CULTURAL EVENTS:
As for the nightlife scene, the cultural scene is well developed in Split. I’d say it’s one of the best in the country! So if you’re looking for music festivals, art exhibitions, traditional fairs, or any kind of cultural events on your solo travel to Croatia, Split is the place to go!
Don’t forget to check the events calendar of Split when you’re visiting and make sure you don’t miss anything!
CLIMB MARJAN HILLS FOR SUNSET:
In my opinion, this is one of the best sunset spots in the country… And believe me, I’ve watched numerous sunsets in Croatia.
Not only is the walk to the top of Marjan Hill lovely, but the panoramic view over the Adriatic Sea you’ll get from up there will take your breath away.
Whether you want to go by yourself or with the new friends you’ve made as a solo traveler in Croatia, you won’t regret it! Don’t forget to bring a camera to immortalize this moment!
GO ON A DAY TRIP TO TROGIR:
Bored of the busy old town of Split or in need of a quieter place to spend the day? Trogir is your winner!
Located half an hour by bus from Split, Trogir is a lovely picturesque town that will make you fall in love in a matter of minutes. Wander around the narrow, cobbled streets and window-shop for a few hours before stopping at a café terrace to enjoy a typical Croatian lunch or a quick coffee with a view over the sea.
Honestly, I’m still daydreaming about this place and it was one of my favorite destinations in Croatia!
KLIS FORTRESS FOR THE GAME OF THRONES FANS:
Let me be honest with you, I have been quite disappointed by the Klis Fortress. Is it lovely? Yes! Is it worth it? Probably, but you need to be a history enthusiast or a Game of Thrones fan to fully enjoy it!
It’s not that I’m not a Game of Thrones fan – you have to be after watching the series – but the trouble to get there and the entrance fee were not worth the 5 minutes of excitement to me…
So now that it’s been said, it’s your choice whether or not you want to add the Klis Fortress to your Solo Travel Croatia Itinerary!

ZAGREB
Capital city of the country, Zagreb has surprised me in more than one (positive) way! If you are planning to solo travel to Croatia, don’t miss out! And believe me, you won’t stay solo for long… With its vibrant nightlife and multitude of tourist attractions, Zagreb draws a multitude of travelers all year round!
Architecture, museums, restaurants, parks, shops… There isn’t one thing missing in Zagreb! You will have so many things to do and see that you will forget about the Croatian coast and will probably stay there longer than you were originally planning…
After this short introduction, you must be dying to discover all the things to do in Zagreb! Lucky you, I have selected the most popular ones along with my favorites for you to have the best experience in Croatia!
TOP THINGS TO DO IN ZAGREB
EXPLORE THE UPPER TOWN (Gornji Grad)
Located in the central part of Zagreb, Gornji Grad is called the Upper Town because of its position atop the hill. It could be referred to as the historic district, as most of Zagreb’s historic monuments are in this area.
Here is a quick list of things you can’t miss while walking around Gornji Grad:
- St Mark Church
- Lotrscak Tower
- The Croatian Parliament
- Zagreb’s Cathedral
- Stone Gate (Kamenita vrata)
EXPLORE THE LOWER TOWN (Donji Grad)
After exploring the Upper Town of Zagreb, or before, it’s time to explore the Lower Town, or Donji Grad. And you’ll see, these two are complete opposites!
Donji Grad offers a totally different atmosphere. More modern, it is considered a center of business, shopping, art, museums, and spacious parks. While it may not boast as many historic Croatian buildings, you’ll love the much more energetic ambiance.
CABLE CAR RIDE
Did you know that Zagreb’s cable car is one of the shortest in the world? Well, I didn’t before visiting… And I believe this title deserved a special mention in this Solo Travel Croatia blog post.
The cable car connects the Lower and Upper Towns of Zagreb, and even though it might not be necessary to ride it (being only 66 meters long), it can be a fun experience to see it in action!
Visit Ban Jelačić Square AND ITS MARKET
It’s hard to determine whether Ban Jelačić Square and its market are located in the Upper or Lower Town of Zagreb. Technically, it’s at the bottom of the Upper Town’s hills and on the border of the Lower Town…
But does it really matter? If you’re traveling to Zagreb, it’s one of the places you must see!
As the largest square in Zagreb, it’s actually the principal plaza of the capital. And if the market is on when you visit, you’ll just love the atmosphere!
TAKE A LOOK AT ZAGREB’S STREET ART
There isn’t a particular route to follow to enjoy Zagreb’s street art, so just keep your eyes open while walking around the city. You’ll be amazed by the numerous murals and graffiti scattered all over the city!
And if you’re a street art lover, I highly advise you to check out this article before you visit Zagreb. There’s so much interesting information about Zagreb’s street art scene!
take a stroll in zagreb’S parks
In need of evasion, far from the agitation and energy of the capital? Look no further! In the heart of Zagreb you will find numerous parks to relax and enjoy some peace.
Here are the best parks to add to your Zagreb itinerary:
- Lenuci’s Green Horseshoe
- Park Maksimir
- The botanical garden
- Bundek city park
MUSEUMS
Zagreb might not be the biggest capital of Europe but it has something more than the others… MUSEUMS!
I know, i know what you are thinking… There are a ton of museums in Paris, Madrid and Roma too. But here is something you probably don’t know: Zagreb is also called the city of museum, as it has more museums per square metre than in any other city!
Whether you are into art, history or even archeology, you will find what you are looking for on your solo travel to Croatia. And if the weather is not good, it is always a good idea!
HAVE A FEW LOCAL DRINKS AND ENJOY NIGHTLIFE
Now we’re talking… Especially if you’re traveling solo and want to meet new friends. What better way to do it than by sharing a few drinks and getting to know each other?
Zagreb is the perfect place for this! Craft beer, local wines, numerous bars, nightclubs, and live music… You’ll find the kind of nightlife you want and will meet fellow travelers sharing the same interests as you!
Don’t be shy and go out! One of my favorite places to start the evening in Zagreb is Tkalciceva Street, with plenty of cafes, bars, and restaurants!
TRY CROATIAN FOOD
Well, you can try Croatian food all over Croatia… But some of the best restaurants are in Zagreb. Whether you want to try čevapi, štrukli, or burek, just google it and find the restaurant that prepare it the best!
And if the place you found is cute, even better! There’s no better way to continue your day than by having a happy belly.
DAY TOUR TO PLITVICE NATIONAL PARK
Oh myyyy… Plitvice National Park! Along with Krka National Park, it must be one of my favorite places in Croatia. I don’t want to spoil it for you but… You’ve never seen a place like that before!
Here’s everything you need to know to plan your day trip to Plitvice National Park:
- You don’t have to book a guided tour. In fact, you will save a lot of money if you plan your day trip by yourself.
- You can book a bus from Zagreb to Plitvice National Park on Flixbus for approximately $15 per person.
- The entrance fee to the park depends on the season you are visiting. Check the prices here!
- Bring water and food as there are no facilities inside the National Park.
- It is accessible to everyone as you can select the length of the route you are going to walk.
- If you are going on a sunny day, don’t forget to bring sunscreen, as there is not a lot of shade there!

DUBROVNIK
Dubrovnik, often called the “Pearl of the Adriatic” is the ultimate stop of your solo travel to Croatia… Last but not least, though. Dubrovnik is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Croatia, and with good reason.
Fortified city on the shore of the Adriatic Sea, it will make you feel like you are part of a movie. And if you are part of the Game of Thrones community, you will be transported into the settings of your favorite series.
You might want to know, though, that Dubrovnik is more expensive than other Croatian cities… I couldn’t tell you why. It might be because of its touristic interest or its position farther down the coast… I have no idea, to be honest, but what I do know is that it is worth every penny you will spend during your time there!
TOP THINGS TO DO IN DUBROVNIK
WANDER AROUND THE OLD TOWN
Get ready to be transported to the medieval age and enjoy the experience. Dubrovnik’s Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is probably the most famous Old Town in Croatia. And once you visit, you will quickly understand why. Narrow cobbled streets, architecture, cafés, and restaurants… Just wander around and get lost in this piece of history!
While you are there, don’t forget to take a look and visit, if you are interested, the Church of Saint Blaise, the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the Franciscan Church and Monastery, and many more historic buildings!
Believe me, even though Dubrovnik is more expensive than other Croatian cities, you won’t regret stopping by!
WALK THE CITY WALLS
There is no better way to take in the panoramic views of the city and the Adriatic Sea than by walking around Dubrovnik’s City Walls. However, it comes with a price. It might not fit into your budget, but just so you know, the cost varies between $15 and $35 depending on the season you are visiting.
If you decide to take the tour, don’t forget to wear sunscreen and bring water with you as the entire walls are exposed to the sun. Especially during the summer, it can get really hot!
VISIT LOKRUM ISLAND
Want to escape from the busy old town? A short ferry ride away from Dubrovnik is Lokrum Island, the perfect place to relax on quieter beaches. While you’re there, don’t miss out on the monastery and the botanical gardens.
The ferry tickets cost around $20 per person roundtrip. So, make the most of your time on the island!
SUNBATHING ON THE BEACH
If you’ve been following my Croatia itinerary, you more than deserve a relaxing day at the beach. Sunbathing, swimming, and enjoying the beauty of the places… That’s what vacations are for!
You have two options if you want to go to the beach in Dubrovnik. Well, actually more, but here are the two best beaches near Dubrovnik:
- Beach Šulić and Danče Beach: They are the two closest beaches to the Old town. So if you’re not bothered to take a bus or walk, that might be your best option.
- Pasjača Beach: This beach is located further away from Dubrovnik, 29 km to be exact. So you will have to take transportation to get there. But the beauty of the place is worth the trouble, I promise.
RIDE THE CABLE CAR OR WALK TO THE TOP OF MOUNT SRD
Whether you are into hiking or not, going to the top of Mount Srd is a must when visiting Dubrovnik. If you are walking there, know that it will take you about one hour and a half, depending on your speed and how many times you stop to take photos. Don’t forget your water and sunscreen; it can get hot during the summer months!
If for any reason you can’t walk up there, don’t worry! You can ride Dubrovnik cable car and enjoy the same views as fellow hikers. A round trip ticket for an adult costs around $25, so take it into account when planning your budget for Croatia!
GAME OF THRONES TOUR FOR THE INCONDITIONAL FANS
If you are traveling to Croatia for the Game of Thrones locations, you’ll be happy to know that there is a lot to do and see about the series in Dubrovnik.
Escape games, museums, and filming locations will make you feel like you’re living in King’s Landing! There are plenty of available tours, so you might want to do your own research to find the one that best meets your expectations. Just know that they usually cost between $20 and $30, which isn’t too bad if you’re a real fan of the series!
And if you don’t want to pay, you can still do some research beforehand and go on a treasure hunt around the city to find the filming locations of your favorite show!
CULTURAL EVENTS AND NIGHTLIFE
All year round, there are a multitude of events happening in Dubrovnik, so you might want to check the events calendar when visiting to make the most of your experience there.
If nothing special is happening, don’t worry; there are plenty of places to go out at night. Rooftops, cafés, taverns, nightclubs… You’ll find a way to enjoy yourself, I’m sure of that! And who knows, maybe you’ll meet fellow solo travelers along the way!
