You are planning to visit the most beautiful city of Ecuador, and you are wondering “What is the best time to visit Cuenca?”
After living here for a year, I have the answer for you!
But first, here is why you HAVE to visit.
You might be surprised that the city has been recognized among the Cultural Heritage Cities of Humanity by UNESCO. And when you visit, you will quickly realize why.
The Colonial style of the buildings will make you travel through time and the cultural traditions, still very practiced by locals, will make you want to learn more about the Ecuadorian Culture.
Honestly, I have been traveling all around Ecuador, and Cuenca is DEFINITELY my favorite city of all.
The only downside of it is the weather…
As the city is located at an elevation of 2500m in the Ecuadorian Andes, the climate quickly changes. As I always say:
“Some days it will feel like spring and others like fall”.
Theoretically, the colder and rainier season in Cuenca happens from September to December. (Except for this year… Due to the Niño, the Ecuadorian Andes has been SUPER dry.)
But I’ve learned through my time here that the weather is just a question of luck. You can’t trust the forecasts as they will say that every day is going to be a rainy one, and I reassure you, IT IS NOT TRUE!
So to enjoy your trip, I’d advise you to pack for both situations: Fall and Spring kinda weather. And don’t stress too much about it, rainy days in Cuenca are a real mood.
I know bad weather can be annoying when traveling, but even in the rain, Cuenca is worth visiting. And you finally do, you might want to check this article out to make sure you don’t miss a thing.
